Queen of the Road - Thousands of new truckers are hitting the road every year. Are they properly trained to handle the big rigs? Watch Dan Rather Reports, Tuesdays at 8 pm ET.
I know just how Desiree feels, I too put myself through a trucking school. Though the trucking school gave me 30 days of training, we didn't get the required hours of drive time behind the wheel. The requirements of drive time was 100 hours, but they would log it down as we recieved that time but in reality, we only got about 30 hours. It's funny how Dan did the segment on CRST, Inc. the first company I drove for, and the worst ever. I was lucky to be placed in the truck with a trainer that happen to be Gay and didn't have a thing for women. He was a nice man, but it made me so mad when they placed me on the truck with him, we drove back to Indiana for him to take his 2 week vacation, in which I sat in his truck at the terminal for that time until he got back without driving or further training. I quit that company and went to drive for Dick Simon, this company wasn't any better, the way they treat the drivers as if we are all pigs. Even if your out of hours for driving, they don't care. If your tired and fatigued, they want you to keep the truck rolling. These companies will hire anyone, is doesn't matter. I had a perfect driving record and I held absolute safety the whole time I drove for any company. The only tickets I ever got was being overweight on my load when I tried to refuse the overweight load, my dispatcher demanded that I take it and ended up with a overweight ticket in which I made sure the company paid for. It's not always the drivers, it's the companies and the dispatchers. These are the real people that need to be investigated. If you weed out the bad companies and the bad employees who work within the company, then you weed out the bad drivers. I honestly think that DOT needs to set up shop in the offices of these companies to monitor how they work and run their operations. The three companies I drove for was CRST, Dick Simon and Swift Trans. All three of these companies are the worst, and I'm sure there are so many others that break all the rules.
Not one mention of the real cause of a Driver shortage? The truth is that the pay is so bad, that the Professional Drivers are leaving faster than they can fill the seats! No Professional Driver will, or can work for the money that is being offered today! This is a crises that is going to become so much worst, before it gets better! The Independent (Owner Operator) has it even worst with having to deal with a third party called a Broker. The Broker is profiting from their hard work without taking any loss, or adjustment of profits due to the current economic recession. These Brokers are unregulated, and this leaves many opportunities by them to scam this industry. This will continue because of the way the system is setup, and bring so unregulated. Independent Drivers, along with smaller Trucking Company's continue to shut down because of the less work, lower rates, along with the higher costs to operate, and maintain the equipment. Plus Company's have less work where Drivers are sitting more waiting for loads, and their not making any money unless they're moving. This opens the door to the larger Company's that will hire these new, or less experienced Drivers to fill the revolving seats from the higher Driver turn over. Once these new Driver's realize what they got themselves into, and do not make the kind of money that they were promised - they quit!Until the Professional Truck Driver can make the money that they deserve, your safety and confidence driving along side these big trucks on our roads will only diminish. Then only until many accidents with fatalities are accumulated, will someone wake up and ask what happened - what can we do now? People always have to die before something is ever done - It's the American way!
